You're handling it very well

For a second, Professor Hawthorne was scrutinising him with a frown on her face. Kir swallowed hard because he really didn’t like the idea of being in trouble, remembering suddenly with a slight nervousness that he was now a prefect and that there were Expectations. But he held her gaze steadily. Because even if he was about to be in trouble, he wasn’t sorry. Embarrassed as heck, sure. Probably a bit angry too. But some things were more important than his personal feelings of discomfort, or how the school expected him to behave. Anyway, prefects were meant to be good role models and representations of their houses, right? Sticking up for the underdogs, trying to make the school a safer place for everybody… He thought those were things that came under the definition of ‘good role-model.’ Although he wondered whether the school would agree, if it involved him rocking the boat… He was glad he’d also got a basic definition out there, just in case Professor Hawthorne was about to (try to) shut him down on the subject.

However, her frown cleared. Whatever she had been considering, she seemed to side with him. Even Kir felt his eyes widening in surprise as she wrote up a full list of sexual orientations. A very full list. Professor Hawthorne was seriously down with her terminology and he was impressed. She also threw in a little lecture on gender. Kir tried to survey his classmates’ faces but it was hard from his position at the back of the room. He suspected that by the time they got into pansexuality and gender fluidity, some of them were starting to get lost. But the main thing was that the message was out there that they didn’t have to fit into a narrow little box of boys like girls, and that there was nothing wrong with it if they didn’t.

“Very thoroughly, thank you,” he beamed at her, when she asked if his question was answered, “One more thing though… Like you said, there’s nothing wrong with being any of those things but more than that… You said veela don’t affect gay men, and do affect lesbians. If something as powerful as veela enchantment can’t shift someone’s sexuality, that’s fairly solid magical proof that these things are innate, isn’t it? It’s not a choice to be any of these things. It’s part of who people are.” Clearly Professor Hawthorne believed that, and again, he was not particularly asking. He was educating.
