When Professor Brooding had announced the details of the new academic programme, Tess had immediately known she wanted to apply. Potions was one of her favourite subjects – who wouldn’t love a subject where you got to brew all manner of incredible concoctions? – but there was more to her desire to apply than just this. As well as the fact that she generally enjoyed academic pursuits (she guessed it came naturally when your father was a professor), Tess had had a game plan since deciding on her RATS subjects the previous year.

She was taking five RATS subjects: Charms, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration. These were all carefully chosen to give her the best chance of being accepted to study healing at university. Her desire to become Healer stemmed from the health problems her younger sister, Emma, had suffered. Emma had been born during the summer before Tess’s third year at Sonora, and had HLHS, a condition that led to an underdeveloped heart. Things had been touch-and-go for a while, but after several risky operations Emma was, although not cured, able to live a relatively normal life. Tess had been so grateful to the hospital staff who had worked tirelessly to save Emma and to provide hope and comfort for the family, and this had inspired her to become a Healer.

With this in mind, Tess went along to Professor Brooding’s office hours to ask if she could participate in the scheme. Knocking on the door, she waited for permission before entering and walking over to the professor, not wanting to interrupt in case Professor Brooding was talking to another student.

“Hi Professor,” she smiled, taking her usual relaxed but polite approach. “I wanted to ask if you’d consider me for the academic programme you mentioned in class? I’d love the opportunity to have some more brewing experience, especially as I’m looking to apply for a healing course at university next year.”

She hoped that the professor would consider her a potential applicant. Tess was an intelligent and diligent member of her class, with every chance of meeting the grade requirements needed to study healing at a good university, and the academic programme would bolster her application as well as giving her a fun opportunity to get some more practical experience.

OOC: I hope it's ok to say Tess walked into the office!
