I'd imagine that it has been suspected to be unhealthy for more than a century. Most people I think realized that smoking, at the very least, was not a healthy habit. It affected your wind if you engaged in any sort of aerobic activities.

It defies logic that inhaling smoke would be good for you. After all...people die of smoke inhalation in a fire.

Yet people still choose to smoke despite the obvious. A guy I hired about a year and a half ago finally went the Chantix route. He's got problems with things being addictive anyway. He can't stop eating junk food either. Despite the fact that it was once detrimental to his career.
