Meeting ...

"'They decided not to show up; they have been all talk and no action,' said Trump while flanked by two empty chairs and placards bearing the names of Pelosi and Schumer. 'It is even worse, not even talk. They're not showing up for the meeting.'"

Question: How can two opposing parties reach a compromise if one party is afraid to negotiate?

Flanked by Empty Seats, Trump Rips Dems for Skipping Meeting

President Donald Trump blasted Democratic leaders for not attending a White House meeting to discuss a spending deal and used a pair of props to make his point.

Trump met briefly with the White House pool Tuesday afternoon and addressed the meeting that included House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Hours earlier, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., decided not to attend.

"They decided not to show up; they have been all talk and no action," said Trump while flanked by two empty chairs and placards bearing the names of Pelosi and Schumer. "It is even worse, not even talk. They're not showing up for the meeting."

Ryan and McConnell both expressed their distaste for their Democrat colleagues' decision not to attend.

"It is regretful that our Democratic colleagues in leadership chose not to come [Tuesday]," Speaker Ryan said. "For a bill to become a law, Congress has to pass a bill. The president signs a bill. That means Congress and the White House always negotiate legislation."

Sen. McConnell added he has "never seen someone turn down an invitation to the White House. Only one person in America can sign a bill into law, and that is the president of the United States. You cannot negotiate the spending bill without the person who signs the bill in the room.

"I think the Democratic leaders in the House and Senate need to understand the way the government works."

Lawmakers must come to an agreement on funding the government by Dec. 8 to prevent a potential government shutdown.

Schumer spoke on the Senate floor earlier Tuesday after Trump appeared to take a shot at Democrats regarding efforts to come to an agreement.

"Rather than going to the White House for a show meeting that won't result in an agreement from a president who doesn't see a deal, we've asked Leader McConnell and Speaker Ryan to meet with us this afternoon," Schumer said.
