Former Obama Adviser Resigned from Post After Being Arrested, Charged With Sex Crimes: Report

WILLIAM VAILLANCOURT | FEB 12, 2018 | 4:56 PM

A senior adviser to President Barack Obama resigned from his position following his arrest for attempted voyeurism in November 2016, according to the Daily Mail.

William Mendoza, former executive director of the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education, was reportedly convicted of following women on the D.C. Metro and trying to take pictures up their skirts.

Mendoza, 42, was supposed to be at work and was using a taxpayer-funded transportation card at the time he took the photos with his government-issued iPhone in July 2016, documents obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request show.

After resigning from his post in November 2016, Mendoza pleaded guilty in January 2017. He was given a 90-day suspended prison sentence, one year's probation and a $100 fine.

His lawyer, Paul Kiyonaga, said he is receiving treatment.

“Mr. Mendoza has taken responsibility for this charge of attempted voyeurism,” Kiyonaga said. “He’s received treatment for the underlying issues that gave rise to this incident, and, with the strong support of his family, is moving forward productively with his life.”

Mendoza assumed his role in the administration in 2011, after Obama created the position via executive order. He has not worked in government since his resignation, with the Department of Education's Office of the Inspector General citing his “suitability” as a factor.
