If the people COULD continually vote for more benefits and lower taxes, they WOULD do so. There is no way that the people would ever vote to increase their own taxes or to cut their own benefits.

I think one of the ADVANTAGES of a representative democracy versus a direct one is that those representatives are in a better position to vote on bigger pictures than the individual. Because they vote based on how tens or even hundreds of thousands of constituents tasked them to as opposed to voting simply based on one viewpoint.
