OK, not what I expected. Meet Nala.

Yesterday, I was looking at a dog at a rescue out in the Brandywine country, and she hypnotized me into bringing her home.

This is Nala. She part lab, probably part pit, maybe a little hound. Hard to know. She came from TN, where her people turned her in to a high kill pound. Lord knows why. She not well trained, but that is not her fault. And bringing her home yesterday was not the plan. I was going to go look at her. Then Frank and I were going up to the golden retriever rescue today, and then I was going to decide. Instead, I just found myself bringing her home. Like she hypnotized me with those golden eyes or something. So we'll see how she gets along with the birds
The rescue where she was has all kinds of birds, and I do mean all kinds. Free ranging chickens, turkeys, ducks, peacocks, an emu. She paid no mind to any of them. So we are hopeful.
Today we had an incident, but Merlin caused it. So now we have to see if they can both overcome that memory. Nala was just ignoring the birds when Merlin threw herself in front of her squawking and flapping. Of course Nala chased. I hollered NO! DH grabbed Merlin, and all was calm again. But then this afternoon Nala growled at Merlin. But both times, she took correction very well, so we'll see. She's got two weeks unless there's another incident. We won't make it to three strikes. But I'm hopeful. She's a very calm dog, mostly, although still anxious as you would expect.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Working a new pack member in is tough enough when all the pack members are people. Convincing a dog that two birds have higher pack numbers than she does is tricky. We've managed it three times, twice with grown dogs, but it's different with each dog.

Good luck with her...I can see how she hypnotized you with her eyes. She is a beauty!

I appreciate your point of view. I have introduced three grown dogs to these birds now, and so far, it's always worked out well. Always with the same procedure of tethering the dog, and only allowing ... more

Hoping that Nala works out in the end. It's hard, especially when an established pack member starts trouble. Maybe a bit of separation for a while might work. It sounds like Nala has potential. Maybe ... more
