Well, Maya was right. Nala is a very, very nice dog - but not for a family who keeps any kind of other pets. She's a full time hunter. She darn near caught the squirrel in yard yesterday, and as you know, that's a feat.
She's been hunting the birds ever since she got here. She's going back tonight. I feel horrible about it, but it was my own fault. They will find a her a real home soon, I'm sure, because she's a fully trained dog. She has a recall, sits, is house trained, and in a closed room or her crate settles at the command settle. But she patrols ceaselessly, and is very protective of her people. If I greet a neighbor first, Nala just ignores them. If she sees someone before I do, I get a little growl warning.
She so wants a home. She bonding right to my husband, whom all dogs love right away. It's best to take her back sooner rather than later.
We've already had one incident between Nala and Merlin, and ever since, Nala's patrols have centered more and more on the room the birds are in. Also she's not eating much, so she's getting hungry, which is not good, either.
But I will tell you, neither of my doodles ever had the effect on Merlin that Nala has had. Of course, neither one was a hunter, just interested. I see now what people mean when they call doodles goofy. Compared to any doodle I have ever known, Nala is far more focused and self-contained. She really does not care about anybody outside the house. And, interestingly, seems to have been trained not to take food from strangers. She is going to make somebody a fine watch and guard dog. She quite tolerant of children. And not the slightest bit playful or cuddly. Maybe in a less fraught home, she will relax a bit more.

All this is just falling out of me in no order because I feel so awful. Between Nala and Mags, I have totally lost my confidence in my ability to choose a dog. I feel like I gave both of them the shaft for not being their forever home. I think this is where I give up. Maybe I should just wait a couple of years till I retire to do this, so I'm home.
Anyway thanks for all your encouragement, and Maya especially, for all your very sensible counsel.
