That is ghastly, but I know it does happen. Dogs bark for all kinds of reasons, not just when they are sad, lonely or bored. Anyone playing with their Doodles throwing the ball etc knows that dogs bark when they are happy too!
It's all very well for someone to say they would 'never' have their dog's voice modified, but faced with either get rid of the dog or quieten him/her, I wonder how many would actually turn their dog in to a shelter or lose their family member some other way.
The Rutland dogs were done by a registered vet according to DPI Code of Ethics for Debarking (yes it does exist, you can google it) and by laser, not by surgery. The dogs who were done can now bark happily to their hearts's content. They still enjoy the psychological benefits of being allowed to bark instead of being rowsed on for doing what comes naturally. Their voices are just softer now and the sound doesn't carry to the neighbors.
debarking is done by the breeders and not by a vet. They take a long pole and stuff it down the throat of the dog to damage the vocal cords. Which of course you really have to wonder about a person... more
