Constant singing

I realize this is an older post but I was wondering if you could tell me how your child's teacher was able to work with his humming/singing in class. I have a 2.5 year old who constantly sings in two languages. His teachers told me yesterday that they had to separate him from the group during circle time and sit him in a chair because he wouldn't stop singing while a mommy (dentist) was giving them a "presentation." My husband and I feel this was rather punitive for a 2.5 year old. There are ways to get him to stop although he is very persistent sometimes... I'd like to give them ideas to curb the singing or just manage it better in class. He is becoming more and more bilingual and I feel like his singing is a way he is processing his language and constantly improving on his articulation. We have been working on "listening" vs. "talking/singing" time but he sometimes forgets. Any help would be appreciated.
