When my girls were little, their biggest concern about death

was "what would happen to them" if one of both of their parents died... I reassured them that they would be okay, that Grammy & Grampa, or an aunt or uncle they knew well would take them in but that they'd stay together and would be fine even though they'd be sad for awhile...

After asking for a few details about what would happen exactly and then making comments as to who they hoped would or wouldn't come to take them in, they settled down and stopped worrying about it...

At so young of an age, it's more the confusion and uncertainty as to what will happen to them if orphaned or if they die... Not until they reach grade school and see more of the world do most of the other important questions and random fears come up...

One thing I learned about small children and the loss of a pet is to properly mourn the petby burying it with a little ceremony & marking its grave, showing sorrow & loss but without getting crazy--- and NOT to replace the pet too quickly but when it's time for another pet, never replace the lost one with something just like what was lost... If you had a black'n'white cat, get a tabby or a dog or a bunny... and always give pets NEW names, don't recycle them... and it's okay to remember the old pet even when playing with the new pet without having to feel guilty or mad at the new one for not being the old one... that's how kids learn that someone special was lost forever and that once something dies, it cannot come back nor be replaced with another but it's OKAY to fill the empty spot in their lives & hearts with another pet to love when they are ready...

As you can imagine from my remarks, we made a couple of those mistakes and also witnessed a few others made... and our kids taught US the rest with their reactions... (-;

Nothing like raising children to show us all that we've forgotten... (like how good mud feels being squished between your toes when you're not thinking about cleaning up the mess later... or how cool an ant colony actually is... and how good a cherry lollipop really is... (0;

Enjoy them, the days pass too quickly...
