And in that pause to ponder the fact that words mean something. That words are more than merely ink on paper or pixels on a screen. That they are symbols of reality.

Did the violent rhethoric and incitements to violence that have become all too common in the American political discourse cause, directly or indirectly, Jared Loughner to buy himself a Glock and go down to the mall and slaughter a bunch of innocent men, women and even a little girl?

Chances are they didn't in any meaningful sense. He was a nutjob who would have, chances are, spontaneously combusted sooner or later for some reason or no reason thagt is intelligible to any mind but his own.

But what his massacre does do, in terms of the violent rhethoric and incitements to violence that have become all too common in the American political discourse, is to make those words into flesh rather than merely paper and blood rather than merely ink.

The cold flesh and spilled coagulating blood of men and women and a little girl who, to paraphrase

were not witches or terrorists or Marxists or any of the other diabolical terms that are used to demonize political opponents and those who disagree politically, they were just like you and me.

And that gives thinking people pause to think about what violent rhethoric and incitements to violence really mean and what place they should have in the American political discussion.
