I hope you aren't hiding from me

It took Charline a good minute of gaping unabashed at her clothing to recognise the girl hidden beneath all that material. The new transfer student was not someone she was acquainted with however it was only the knowledge that this stranger was new that Charline was aware of her existence at all. Apart from the occasional housemate and the few friends she had, Charline did not associate with a vast variety of people. She knew nearly nothing at all about Pamela although it was safe to assume she would not make the cut to be included in the Lyra’s limited circle of friends. She was too scruffy and sickly looking for Charline who always made an effort to appear well dressed and neat.

It was a mystery to her why she accepted Reece’s usual disheveled appearance but if she was honest with herself she found it rather endearing on him. The large hoodie did nothing for Pamela’s physic and if she had been a more charitable person Charline would have insisted she come shopping with her for something more suitable. Instead she looked the girl over once more with sapphire blue eyes deliberately widened for effect. “My dear Pamela,” she cried as though they were good friends before bringing her hand to her mouth in an image of shock, “and I thought my parents had poor taste in clothes!”

She didn’t know why she did it. Pamela Wrey had never done anything to her but Charline found an odd sense of satisfaction in putting others down. Everyone knew spiteful words rolled off her tongue with ease in a way compliments never would. She would admit it was her least appealing characteristic. Now that she had begun the third year found it almost impossible to stop. Tugging at her own over-sized cardigan she continued forcing a giggle, “Next to you this isn’t looking so large after all. We can’t blame them really, after all Muggles do wear some crazy things, how would our parents know what would look best?”

There was a cold breeze in the air and so she found her legs shivering unused to being so exposed. Pamela was sure to be roasting underneath all those layers and for a second she felt sorry for the girl. Why on earth was she dressed so bizarrely? Shaking her head the pureblood finally stepped forward clearing the road for Pamela. “Perhaps I ought to have brought a scarf after all. You must be nice and cozy wrapped up in all that.”

She studied Pamela some more and realized that the girl had never seemed comfortable since they had first exchanged words. She was a timid thing and it might be possible that she just knew her place in society. It was a pleasant feeling meeting someone who did not try to push their luck and seek equality with those richer and higher up the social scale than themselves. “I haven’t got very long, but if you are hungry I’d be happy to buy you some lunch.”

It was supposed to come out in a much less irritated tone as she failed to make a friendly and charitable offer. Pamela was probably desperately poor and could never afford to eat in some of the fancier cafes Pearl Street could boast of. If she gave this sad creature a word of kindness and a warm meal then Pamela could walk away a changed person. Her confidence and self worth would be multiplied all thanks to Charline’s generosity.
