New beginnings!

Sam glanced over at Erin as they walked to the Finer Diner. As usual, her friend looked calm and collected. She wouldn’t be surprised if Erin was nervous; she just had a knack for hiding her emotions. Tonight they would be sorted. Sam had been trying to prepare herself for being separated from Erin—during the Orientation week she thought she did a good job of getting to know people.

Her breath caught in her throat as she entered the room. Of course she had seen colored fire before, but these bonfires were huge. Her eyes darted around to each, trying to figure out which one she’d be sitting at shortly. She didn’t know much about the Houses other than their names and colors, so Sam didn’t have much to go on.

The perpetually grouchy Deputy Headmaster told all of the first years to take out their dreamcatchers. Sam had no need to rifle through her bag. She had been clutching the dreamcatcher for the better part of fifteen minutes. However, as she looked down, she noticed that it was different. Instead of jet black, the dreamcatcher was now a deep blue. That meant she had been sorted into Cetus.

“What did you get?” she whispered to Erin. Sam craned her neck to see what color Erin had gotten. It was cream, the color of Aquila. At last, their fate was sealed. They wouldn’t be in the same House, but Sam hoped their promise of staying friends would stick. As Erin walked away to join her new housemates, Sam mumbled under her breath.

“You’d better not ditch me again…” She immediately regretted the words and hoped that Erin hadn’t heard them. Since the Orientation dinner the girls had patched up their friendship, but a small part of Sam was still hurt by her friend’s behavior.

Trying to put all negative thoughts behind her, Sam scuffled over to the blue bonfire. Some of her housemates smiled as she walked by them. Hopefully everyone would be nice here. She didn’t know anything about Cetus, but she had to have something in common with these people.

She grabbed a plate of food from a house elf without even looking at what it was and plopped down in the first empty seat she found. Sam didn’t want to overthink where she sat lest her nerves get the best of her.

She let out a small groan after she saw what she had taken from the elf: it appeared to be some sort of seafood, which Sam absolutely loathed. The British girl considered herself a fairly picky eater so she was sincerely regretting her haphazard decision.

Taking a deep breath, she turned to the person next to her and asked:

“I don’t suppose you like fish, do you? I’m not going to eat this and I’d hate for it to go to waste.”

She cringed inwardly; what an awkward way to start a conversation. Sam plastered on a smile, hoping it would cover up her discomfort.
