Back for another year

Somehow Arnold Bittleby had made it through a whole year at RMI and now he was back for another one. He had hoped to be taller by this point, but sadly that wasn’t the case. The now second year smiled at the familiar surroundings. He had fun hanging out with his best Muggle friend, Ralph, but all summer he had been thinking about magic. He couldn’t wait to learn new spells, but more importantly he couldn’t wait to play Quidditch again. Though Cetus didn’t do as well as he had hoped, Arnold hoped that he could continue to be the Seeker for his house. He and his father had practiced a bit whenever he wasn’t working, but it wasn’t the same as playing with someone like Emily.

Just as he was about to try and find his friend, he was hit by something quite solid. He let out a cry of surprise when the mass attached itself to him and began shouting unintelligibly.

After recovering from his initial shock, he realized that it was just Emily. She was talking a mile a minute and it took him a moment to catch up. Instead of trying to partake in the conversation, he just nodded, pretending to understand what she was saying. He heard something about saving a seat before she flitted off to force her enthusiasm on someone else.

The short boy slinked over to the blue bonfire and sat down, making sure to leave an empty seat for Emily. He still wasn’t sure exactly how they had become friends, but at least he had someone to talk to when she was around. He didn’t really have many other good friends besides her.

Maybe I should try branching out…

The thought made him shudder. But he felt that it really would be necessary for further survival at RMI—he couldn’t hang out with Emily ALL the time.

He noticed that she had gone to sit with someone else. Arnold rolled his eyes; that was a typical Emily move, trying to make friends with everyone. He grabbed a hotdog from a house elf and bit into it bitterly.

Well, now was as good a time to try branching out as any. He didn’t consider himself good friends with all of his housemates, but he was at least comfortable enough to talk to them. Maybe if he played his cards right, he’s come out of this year with a few more friends.

He turned to the person he was sitting closest to. Swallowing his bite of hotdog, he spoke in the cheeriest voice he could muster.

“Hey there! How was your summer?”
