She was eating pancakes, he noted, which really was an odd breakfast choice. Jack’s, Ma had presented pancakes as a special treat to be had perhaps for lunch or topped with syrup- sometimes honey- as a fun dessert. Having pancakes for breakfast was akin to dining on ice cream at six o’clock in the morning. It simply wasn’t done. He stared at the plate secretly wishing he had thought of it himself. He wasn’t feeling full anymore, his stomach now itched for more fuel to satisfy its rumblings. His mind began to wander and naturally the boy’s head was immediately consumed with images of iced buns and carrot cake. The girl’s voice soon startled the Lyra out of his thoughts.

“I think it’s your turn.”

Jack groaned. He’d been afraid of this outcome. However, her good humour encouraged him to march on. He joked, his broad accent distorted in a crude attempt to master a more refined manner of speech, “As you wish, milady. I only hope you appreciate my noble sacrifice.”

After giving a mock salute he reached for the porcelain cup and took a great gulp. For a moment there was silence as Jack considered the after taste. He raised his dark eyebrows in a comical expression, “Hmm, my verdict...not great but not bad either. “

He examined her some more over the rim of his coffee cup, then slammed it down on the table. Some of the liquid sloshed onto the surface but he spared the small puddle now forming there no notice.

“M’dear Sara, may I call you Sara?” he had internally been referring to her as Suzie, Shaunna and Sara for the last minute or so. Jack ploughed on without waiting an appropriate length of time for her to answer, “I think you we’re dead on with the sugar an’ milk suggestion. I’d give you a cigar but I’m afraid I’ve run out.”

That was an expression his Granda was fond of dishing out. Jack was always being giving a ‘cigar’ for his achievements not that he’d seen any of them yet.

Sam appreciated both his cheeky remark and the fact that he agreed to try the coffee again. Trying to match his attempt at “proper” speech, she responded: “'Tis a noble sacrifice indeed, kind sir. I... more
