I've been here all along.

Stunning? Her? Gosh, it was probably more the dress than anything else. Olivia typically just wore cardigans and jeans, the latter of which a luxury she had discovered in transition to non-society life. This was the exception, and surely after today, she would return to her status as utterly ordinary. “Thank you,” she blushed nonetheless, repressing her tongue’s babbling tendencies. As her heartbeat accelerated, so did her thoughts, wanting to spew fragments through trembling painted lips, the words too fast to physically escape intact. Demitri saw a princess, and Olivia liked it that way. She hated to ruin the image with her blundered, half-construed words.

She could be a princess with him, mostly poised and border-line mysterious, exclusively because of their relative unfamiliarity. The brunette did not know his story, and while she hoped to find out someday who he was and where he came from, she felt no rush to ask. She was also rather excited that he did not know her past either—why, she was fairly sure he did not even know her last name, which was all the better, really, since it was essentially a giveaway—and therefore was blind to the woes that rendered her undesirable. Olivia was a reject, residing now under the guardianship of other rejects. They were a band of misfits, and that solidified their family.

But Demitri did not know that, and it all for the better. Otherwise, would he look at her this way, with what Olivia prayed was affection in his eyes? She assumed from his mannerisms that he was from a pureblood family, one of those sorts, who would cast her off if he knew how just that had already happened, how she had not even been good enough for her own parents to bother keep around. Would he still associate with her if (and when, because she would not half-deceive him forever) he knew the truth? Would he want to dance with her then?

Wait, what?

”Care to dance with me?” His hand was extended, awaiting a response, maybe nervous, maybe eager, or maybe both.

“That would be wonderful,” she grinned, giving him her blue-clad hand and allowing him to guide her over to the dance floor. They were there in no time at all, and she snaked one arm around his neck, just able to reach comfortably. The other hand entwined its fingers in his; this was how people danced in movies, she recalled, and how she had briefly learned as a child. His arm belonged around her waist, and the music sparked movement. “I apologize in advanced if I step on your toes,” she offered in earnest. “I’m afraid I haven’t exactly done this before.” Her mouth felt dumb, but in a way the Draco felt almost obligated to warn him. And she needed to say something, or else looking into his brown eyes would have been too much.
