I’m not in Kansas anymore

“Spooky,” Ika replied, grinning widely up at her friend. Ika wasn’t sure whether or not Zakir considered them friends—he was so reserved and most of the time he seemed bored or annoyed and the nicest conversation they’d ever had was about Keith’s career—but she certainly counted him among her friends. Between Lyubov and Alexa and Amelia and Nicco and Zakir, Ika seemed to have a habit of collecting pureblooded friends. She didn’t mind, but it’d be nice to be friends with people who didn’t have to deal with all that social stuff. That was part of why it was so nice to be with Trent.

“I should’ve known it was you,” she added, sipping her punch. “You always do the coolest costumes.” She remembered the contest a year or two ago when he’d used some charm and potion combination (or something like that) and basically become a living shadow. Zakir was really clever with magic in his costumes. “You should come help me with costuming for Into the Woods, I could use more help.”

Ika had said it as a joke, but it wasn’t a bad idea. He might be better at sets, actually, since this show was going to need a lot of crazy backdrops. If he was interested—which she didn’t expect, but you never knew; people could surprise you—she’d totally get Director Addi to talk to him. They could always use more help on the crew.

“Do you know the band that’s playing?” she asked. Based on the name it was definitely a wizarding group—she didn’t know any Muggles who’d call a band The Mad Inferi. Ika occasionally listened to the Wizarding Wireless Network at work, so she had heard of a few magical artists. But Madame Poff was a fan of the oldies, which meant they didn’t have a lot of modern music playing. “I’ve never heard of them.”

She picked the fondant bat off the top of her cupcake and ate it, washing it down with a sip of punch. “The bassist is kind of cute,” she said, after making sure Trent wasn’t anywhere nearby. Not that there was anything wrong with thinking someone besides her boyfriend was cute, but she didn’t think he’d want to hear her say so.
