Strange. I'm pretty sure I am.

"But what makes you think I'm so special? You hardly know me, Demitri, and while it's really so nice of you to say, you can't possibly know that."

A moment before, Demitri had been open and essentially devoted. But the words spoken, whether they were meant to be cruel or just fact, seemed to shake his entire person. The words echoed through his mind, each time becoming more accusing and demanding. They asked him something he himself did not know and it felt crippling. The Aquila knew he wouldn’t be able to answer the question posed and now that he was faced with such an inquiry his confidence left him.

He took few steps back, breaking any contact that he’d had with Olivia. He wouldn’t let it cripple him, not this time. He felt like a door had been slammed in his face when all he was doing was trying to be nice. It stung and Demitri didn’t want to feel it. He wasn’t sure what he had expected from a reaction to his words but suddenly he felt like he’d done the wrong thing. He shouldn’t have told her that. Maybe if he hadn’t he wouldn’t feel like he did. His emotions were generally a whirlwind, but all of that had come to a halt in a matter of moments.

Demitri looked down at his feet and focused on his breathing. In and out, only that pattern mattered. Not the pain he was feeling or the slight humiliation at being called on something he didn’t know. Just breathing. Words that should have been taken another way were still fresh in his mind, tearing at the walls that were feeble and weak. The Aquila knew he was being slightly irrational; he was blowing things out of proportion. But once he started hurting, he didn’t know how to stop. Besides, even he knew the answer, he wasn’t going to stand there and explain something to someone who clearly wouldn’t believe it.

The only thing that the prince could think to do was cut off the pain. He closed his eyes, took one deep breath, and mentally slammed a door shut. When he opened his eyes again, he straightened his posture and took another step back. With the distance came a slight ache, but the boy ignored it. He looked to the girl who stood in front of him. He nodded his head stiffly and grimaced slightly before flashing a nonchalant smile.

“You’re right,” he said, his voice slightly cold. “I couldn’t know that and it was foolish of me to say.” Demitri fought a new wave of emotions as he told what he knew inside were lies. “I think I’ll be going now, I had a nice time Olivia, thank you for coming with me.”

Demitri turned on his heel and began walking away, not sure if he should look back at all. He decided against it, considering that it would probably just leave him even more upset than he was. He knew she was probably hurt (at least he assumed she was) and that troubled him, but he couldn’t undo what he’d done. It have wouldn’t have lasted anyway.
