Drumming her fingers nervously on her desk, Emily observed Professor Emilian warily. He clearly wasn’t in a good mood this morning, and promptly slammed the door shut well before eleven. The first year sent a silent thanks to her housemate Arnold for telling her to get a move on; she was usually one of the students rushing in at the last minute. She scarcely had time to wonder if anyone would dare enter the classroom “late” before Professor Emilian set a cage on his desk, revealing a tiny green creature. Emily sat up straighter in her desk, straining to get a better view over the taller students who sat in front of her. With the exception of the bowtruckles from Herbology, Emily generally liked learning about magical creatures. After Emilian announced the creature’s name, everything suddenly went fuzzy.

Emily’s standard ponytail slipped over her shoulder as she cocked her head to the side, trying to figure out what was happening. It felt as though her head was no longer attached to her body, and she struggled to remember where she was. A whisper sailed through her mind, a musical voice urging her to come and play. Yes, that sounded like a good idea, right? She felt as if she wanted to do nothing more in the world than follow that mysterious voice, but something in the back of her mind stopped her from standing up. What was it? Emily felt as though she had some obligation, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

By shaking her head rapidly, she was able to come out of the fog long enough to hear the phrase “Erklings eat children.” What had just happened? Emily felt her face flush as she realized that she had been charmed by the Erkling; she should have been more resilient. Glancing around at her classmates, it seemed that everyone around her age seemed to be thinking the same thing. Suddenly her fingers went cold. Surely Professor Emilian wouldn’t actually let them get eaten. Most of her classmates were reasonably talented, but what if they couldn’t perform the spell properly and they got too close to the Erkling? Before she could voice her concern, musical laughter once again filled the air, and Emily felt herself once again drifting off into the fog.
