Krystal Baitman [Aquila]
Oi, you flaming pile of- [tag de Villier]
Sat Jan 4, 2014 13:20

The spot for Krystal's most disliked teacher had been a hard fought competition. She had gone in hostile and with the expectation of them all universally hating her, as well heaping homework on her head, so they had all started in the negative before she'd even set foot in any of their doorways. Professor de Villiers though had taken an early need and had never been surpassed in her loathing. The first, very large factor counting against him was that he was a man. Krystal had never had what could be described as a stable male role model in her life, although she had had plenty examples of its darker side drift in and out of her home and her childhood. Subconsciously, she was extra guarded against the male teachers because she expected them to hurt her on some level, in some way, and simply sitting and doing as they told her was a struggle enough. De Villiers always messed with them in classes. Which, even if it was the point of his subject, subtly confirmed the feeling that it would be better for her to be nowhere near him. Plus he handed out detentions like it was his favourite hobby. Krystal already had a fairly long string of these to her name from assorted staff members (those who cared about things like punctuality, handing in homework and not firing your mouth off) but by far he topped the league table.

It was the reason she was hurrying now. Keen as she was not to spend a minute more than she had to in a room with him, she didn't want to give him the satisfaction of putting her name on that list again. She swore in her head as she saw the door was shut but, as she hurried into the room, she glanced at the clock and a triumphant smile spread across her face as she noticed that the big hand had yet to hit the very top. She'd done it!

She sat at the back, and when something at the front of the room cackled, she glanced vaguely towards it. Although not really enthralled or enticed by the noise, she felt some degree of... interest in it, which was more than was usual for her in this class. But then something seemed to snap her out of it and she found she didn't really care what was in the box any more. She flinched more than anything when she heard it call at her to come and play. Perhaps it was because she was at the back of the room. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that she'd spotted that the world was cruel and unfair long ago, meaning the happy innocence of childhood was something she'd forgotten. But though the creature managed to vaguely rouse her interest, she wasn't all that drawn to it. The feeling was stronger every time it laughed or called but it didn't bother her over much. If she'd heard children laughing in the park or calling out to people to play, she would have passed by. That was for little kids and not something she associated with herself.

Before the Erkling could cackle again, which might have drawn her into a deeper fog, her eyes caught sight of the detention list and one name in particular leapt out at her.

“Oi!” she hollered across the room at de Villiers. “I weren't late!” she shouted indignantly.
