Time for an adventure!

The Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom was rather more Dark Arts-ish instead of Defense-y. That was completely fine with Kašpar, because it made the room much more interesting! Most of the classrooms at RMI seemed to be pretty standard; hard desks that put dents into his elbows, rigid chairs that tended to fall over completely whenever he rocked sideways in them, and boards of notes that spiraled lazily in front of his eyes, putting him into a trance (if not actual sleep) within a surprisingly short amount of time. But the DADA room was lit with hazy torchlight, cartoon monsters grinning from the walls, and even though he still didn’t like the work involved, he much preferred being in this classroom to any of the others-- except for the Quidditch pitch, of course. That was the best place in the school!

The Belarusian boy scurried into the classroom just in the nick of time. Arms and legs akimbo, he went sliding into an empty desk, grabbing hold of his book-bag to make sure that it didn’t fall off his shoulder. “Zhat vas tight!” he gasped to no one in particular. His throat was constricted from the frantic dash down the halls, air wheezing painfully through his lungs, and he had to close his eyes for a few moments so as to force himself to breathe slowly. Gradually the heat faded from his face and he lifted his hands to his head, feeling the soft tangle of hair against his knuckles while he combed his fingers through his scalp. When he was at home he usually tied his hair back, but at school he could take less care with it, leaving the white-blonde tresses to drift loose around his face in his frequent races between classrooms or to knot up into tangles the size of his fist while he tossed restlessly at night. It was true that Kejan kept an eye on him, and he had no doubt that his sister was reporting on him in every one of her letters home, but as long as his mother’s presence remained safely at home, he saw no need to keep his hair tucked away. He was proud of his hair; it had grown out to mid-back by now and he liked the way it looked.

Hazel eyes stayed on Professor Miles for a grand total of half a sentence before meandering off across the walls. They came across the poster of a Norwegian Ridgeback and promptly focused on it, the creature’s outline still partially blurred by the general lack of light in the room and giving the cartoon an appearance that was more ferocious than amusing. Around him, the Defense classroom became a cave, high walls dripping with condensation, tongues of dragon flame bursting up in the corners and blown sideways by a cool draft from some secret entrance in the back. He was no longer a typical boring student, but a Dragonmaster, the plain school robes replaced with a snug leather uniform, boots laced high against the pools of water and piles of hoarded treasure that he would undoubtedly have had to wade through in order to reach this private sanctuary. Kašpar had seen living dragons before; his father worked at the National Ironbelly Reserve in Ukraine and had taken him on more than one occasion to watch the beasts from a safe distance. But here, in this cave, he was right up close against the dragon’s belly, gold shining off the plated scales and reflecting in the slanted eyes...

“Okay, so everyone grab a partner to practise this on.”

For a moment he considered ignoring the direction, but decided that it would be smart to obey the Professor. He’d need a partner to go with him into the dragon caves. There was safety in numbers. Glancing up at the board, he squinted at the letters, his knowledge of written English rather hazy after a summer spent entirely in a comfortable mix of Belarusian and Russian. After pondering the words for several moments and getting nowhere, he simply shrugged and pulled his wand out of his (still unopened) book-bag. He would figure out the spell later, but right now, he had to find a partner! “Hallo!” he greeted a fellow student cheerfully, his trademark toothy grin stretched wide across his face. “Vould you like to be partnering togezher for today?”
