Three…two…one…GO!

The summer. Well, it was simple enough to say it had been a nightmare. Seth wanted to leave it at that, but had to glare at the note the substitute coach had sent about Pitch conditions. That forced him to remember he didn’t have any winter cloths that fit any more, and he was going to look like an idiot. Once, money hadn’t mattered. While he might not have given a flip about the state of his clothes, he still started the year out with a fresh wardrobe of things that fit.

This year…not so much. Growling under his breath, he pulled on a hoody whose arms were about an inch too short. It left a gap between the cloth and his beater gloves. Thankfully his gear still fit, even if his robes were a little tight around the shoulder area. It wouldn’t be pleasant, but with a liberal application of heating charms, it would do. Merlin how he hated winter. Why couldn’t RMI be somewhere warm? Even his move, to the other side of the bloody country, had brought him back to warmth. Seth didn’t hate California, but he loathed being used. “It doesn’t matter idiot, focus on the game.” He muttered under his breath, hating how he was letting personal issues cloud his thoughts before the first game of the season. It was ridiculous, and he wasn’t about to lose the cup in his last year. That simply wasn’t allowed to happen.

The Pitch was as cold as the note promised, and Seth glowered at the field of white as if the tiny crystals of ice were each a personal insult to his being. He spotted Aerin and made sure the bulk of the team was between them. After her little display during try-outs, Seth had implemented a policy of avoidance that had worked remarkably well so far. There was no way it could last the whole year, but he wasn’t looking forward to dealing with the fallout of her curiosity. He didn’t want to deal with her questions or concern. There was nothing she could do to fix it, so why bother?

He met Marcos in the center of the field and couldn’t help trying to crush the Aquila’s hand in his even though the York was larger than he was. Size had never been a factor in Seth’s mind. After all, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.

When he got back to the waiting team, he looked them over. “Okay it’s as cold as a witches…er…nose. Make sure you keep your heating charms up. We’re going to crush Aquila and I can’t have you falling off your brooms because your fingers went numb! Now, let’s get out there, start strong, and win the trophy this year!” As speeches went, it was kind of lame, but Seth hadn’t given it much thought and just winged it. Speeches were never his thing anyway, and they knew that by now.

Then it was game time, and he bit back a curse as the icy wind whipped around him, nibbling at the edges of his heating charm. In a truly foul temper by this point, he decided to spread the misery and launched himself at one of the bludgers. Picking out a random grey robed target, he pelted the metal ball in that direction hoping to score a hit before the other team got situated.
