Since this book is so difficult to read , I decided to go through it with a yellow highlighter and mark only the actual cited documents , if that's what they are. Or the newspaper articles . And hopefully the translation is correct for the Spanish part of it.
I did see a few new items I had not known about.

Since I am an equal oportunity offender , I do have to admit to having the same problem with Digging up Butch and others. Used the yellow highlighter on those too.

The early authors had a story to tell. Later authors added some evidence and each had their own ideas and conclusions.
If all this material were to be put together in some cohessive order and just the facts, evidence or newspaper accounts ,we may be able to put together an actual true story .

But also if I added my own research to all of this it would even make it more clear.

I have shared "some" of my research with Bob G and last year with Mike B . I am still waiting for Bill's book to come as it hopefully will have more facts and research in it. Bill is a level headed researcher .

But I thought I might tell what my opinion is on all of this. After all it is just as good as anothers. I do have documents and a lot of facts but am not ready to publish it yet.

However , over many years , I have collected data that leads me to believe Butch not only came back , but there was a gathering of his old friends in northern California .

This gathering occured in the 1910/11 time period. It is important to know that Sundance was never the good friend of Butch as many try to say. SD and Logan were actually closer and of the same mind set and personality.
I doubt that Butch even wanted to be with SD except for the fact that he had to go to SA or somewhere to escape the relentless hounding in the US.I believe he made the break with SD in Cholila and went on his own in Chile then came back somehow to the US perhaps through Mexico.

And the fact of it is that he had one person above all the others he could trust with his life . That was Elzy Lay. I have put together over the last few years quite a bit on the movements of Elzy and others of the old friends Butch had.

Notice that of all the former outlaws or supposed people who knew Butch, the only one NOT to write about him was Elzy. And he would have known the truth. He truly was an Educated man. He was a big part of the gathering that happened . I have some evidence that he was with Butch in the 1925 time period in Utah and Wyoming , digging up their buried loot.

This is not Phillips/Wilcox. That is absolute. And I believe from some of my research that the source of Phillips later info in his mss is what he got from Elzy.And that Elzy sent Phillips on a wild goose chase. Shined him on in other words.

Bill hurry up with that book. LOL.
