Bob,
as well, the idea that Cassidy and Longabaugh might have met in the 1880s is not "new evidence" either. Donna Ernst first raised the idea 25 years ago, in Sundance My Uncle (1992) and repeated it in The Sundance Kid (2009), both based on modern era recollections from descendants of George Longabaugh, as well as a reference in William T. Phillips's memoir, Bandit Invincible, which we now know was fictionalized, though back in 1992 that was not as settled.

As for whether Sundance was in on the 1889 Telluride bank robbery, Ernst -- upon whom Patterson (1998) had relied -- says that per the Longabaugh descendants' stories, he left the area in 1886. In June 1887, he was arrested in Wyoming for grand larceny, and didn't get out of jail until February 1889. As late as May 1889 he was being sought for threatening a Wyoming sheriff. Ernst (2009) writes that Cook County, Wyoming, records indicate that Sundance might have actually been arrested on 24 May 1889, a scant month before Telluride, but the records do not indicate the disposition of the case. Although she speculates that Sundance might have been involved in the 24 June 1889 Telluride holdup, she has him post-Cortez ranching in Wyoming in 1886, and heading up to Canada following his release from the Sundance jail..

For his part, re Telluride Patterson (1998) puts more credence in Warner (1938), who was one of the bank robbers and who does not mention Sundance's participation at all.

None of this, as you point out, has any real bearing on Brian Meda Bleecker's photograph, which anyone this side of Helen Keller can tell does not depict Cassidy and Sundance. Dan

Brian, "New Evidence" is no proof at all, just that two random men had their picture taken together in the late 1800s. Nothing on the photo or where it was found gives evidence other than that. Now... more

Crook Co is in extreme northeast WY on Mt border. Butch was in Fremont Co hundreds of miles away in 1888 .Tax records prove where Butch was at.

Par, thanks, that was my typo. Is the Fremont tax record 1889 or 1888? Dan

the 1889 tax is listed in 1890 records for previous year. But other records show him listed in Fremont Co in 1888. He had purchased cattle and horses and he also is listed in store receipts for... more
