what I meant was that the dark-red corduroy suits surprised us, but apparently clothes back then were more colorful than is generally imagined. A colleague dug up a comment from Oscar Wilde's early 1880s visit to Tombstone; Wilde wrote that the cowboys "dress like land-locked pirates." Dan
