graphologist vs. questioned document examiner
Wed Aug 29, 2018 3:48pm

no one is dismissing anyone's point out of hand -- heaven help us, this is OWR after all -- but I did get a serious chuckle out of attempts to balloon cherry-picked handwriting variations into, well, I'm not sure what the point was.

A graphologist, by the way, is someone who speculates on personality based on handwriting, the sort of person one might run into at the county fair, and whose table is next to the palm reader's, as opposed to a questioned document examiner, who typically testifies in legal matters, is called in by auction houses, etc.

There is, nonetheless, controversy over the entire subject of handwriting examination, with some saying that it is more of a junk science than anything. A topic I would not dismiss out of hand. Dan

That was my initial thought but it would be wrong to dismiss Chris' point out of hand. While they look similar in some ways overall to me as well, clearly there are also noteworthiness differences.... more
