Hi Vince,
I encourage you to get Brett and I's article Nineteen Aught-One Finding Butch and Sundance. I say that, because it gives you an accurate account of events during this time period. You can buy a copy at the Uintah Regional Historical Center. Ive discussed most of the eyewitnesses accounts I think on here before.

"informed by a man living on the Yellowstone that three men crossed that stream some days PRIOR to the Great Northern hold-up, going northward. One of the was Longabaugh, already identified, and another was Cassidy. The identity of the third, who is believed to be Kid Curry, was not made positive by the man who saw the party ford the river." Anaconda Std July 19, 1901 Obviously, he was telling the truth. If he was looking for fame he would have gone along with saying he saw Kid Curry too. But he didnt. He said he didnt know who the third person was.

A second eyewitness saw Butch in the Musselshell region again PRIOR to the robbery. Great Fall Tribune

Patterson claims that eyewitnesses saw between 4-6 robbers during the Wagner robbery. And yes, I know others say there were only three.

Walt Coburn saw four riders. He identified Harvey Logan and Butch Cassidy.

"Eyewitness Lillie" claims at Star Valley Butch was there. She knew him as Jim Lowe.

The horse stealing event you mentioned, all I can say is that others were involved. More than the three.

Going from memory but Pinkertons added a forth robber to their wanted list in August.

Blake Graham IDs Butch in the SW in May 1901 heading to Globe to get his mail. (not directly connected to robbery)

The April 3, 1902 Pinkerton memo I find extremely interesting for that fact the hospital in NY says Sundance said he had "family in Mont Clair PA" Ive said this before. How would this eyewitness know that? (not directly connected to robbery)

March 19, 1902 Pinkerton memo stating that CW Gardner of Malta saw Sundance in Malta a year ago.(connected to robbery IMO)

Hi Chirs--can you tell me what 'many eyewitnesses put Butch and SD at the scene of the Wagner robbery'? The predominant claim was that there were three robbers seen with some claiming they saw a... more

Vince, Your skepticism is well-founded. One can confect just about any scenario based on newspaper anecdotes and old-timer tales. A case in point is the supposed Walt Coburn sighting of Harvey Logan... more

Thanks, chris. It strikes me what was going on was folks mistaking BK for sundance and calling HIM Longabaugh, and in Coburn's case mistaking deaf charley for Butch assuming that story is true, as... more
