The Scoresby Household was nosier, as Poppa generally had a crowd of co-workers around to celebrate the night before. This year was an even larger crowd as he had added the occasion of his daughter’s wedding to the list of things to celebrate, inviting her co-workers in spite of her protests. It was nearly Christmas Day before the kids had gotten through answering questions about the ceremony and how happy they were and what presents they expected to get and were finally allowed to go to bed. Thom had left with hardly a word, Randy with a slight protest and missing the episode of the Twilight Zone marathon and Grace had somehow managed to disappear amongst the crowd. Someone said they thought they’d seen her sending an owl off in the backyard , a statement that was laughed at by those not in the know.

Christmas morning came and Dad would take them to church to pray for Grama and sit for hours staring at stained glass windows. They get home and the three siblings would be left to sit on the steps of the Pillbox waiting for their parents to “hide the presents”, pretending they didn’t know about hangovers. They spent their time comparing notes on the Bridge-, which Grace couldn’t seem to let go of even now- and swapping stories about what could be over there that was so important they had to keep away. After all, it was a historical site wasn’t it? And Poppa was always getting to go to historical sites, so there shouldn’t have been any problems about it.? Eventually Randy turned the subject to football, challenging his brother to a one on one. Grace could be the ball. She smacked him for that.

The presents would be opened with much shaking of boxes that were marked as fragile and the wrappings would litter the floor as no one really felt like cleaning it up. Dinner would end up being ast night’s leftovers around the tiny kitchen table.

New Years came at the Schuler- now the Campbell- house with much less fanfare, as they gathered on the roof of the house to watch fireworks light up the sky and Poppa tried to point out how the fireworks made the constellations change while Mom and Dad argued quietly about whose turn it was to keep the “be nice to the neighbours” resolution.

And then it was time to shift the kids back to school and for the house to become a little quieter. Naturally this meant another argument between mother and daughter over the appropriateness of outfits , more being late and fast driving to the station and more rushed goodbyes, take cares and “try not to get killed or expelled.” The kids arrived at the school in relief, glad to finally be home among normal people their own age. They’d sat together only for a few moments, before Thom spotted Evangeline, and Randy and Orion went off to talk sports, leaving Grace with Leo and her own resolution not to pick on him quite so much this time around. She smiled at him awkwardly.
