Jael and Devon Grace

There were three reasons why Jael Grace was not attending school in America, at the magical institution where her father acted as Headmaster and chief disciplinarian. Three reasons, but despite all the very many eloquent, casual or snippy ways Devon Grace could phrase them, he was tired of answering the question. Most often he lied about it, or changed the subject, or - the easiest - merely found some obvious fault with the idiot who was asking. His patience had gotten shorter in the past several years; he was tenser and more prone to sudden fluid, wordy streams of cursing.

It wasn't his fault that his sly personality had grown so acidic. He drank more now, though it was impossible to tell -- his alcoholic consumption in the past had been despicable, and as his colleagues, students and family were so used to seeing a gentle wine glass stem falling from between his fingers like an icicle, there was virtually no way of seeing that he refilled it more often. But he had been through madness, and almost everyone knew it, and to some, at least, extreme mental torture for the intelligent is reason enough to daily dull one's senses through drink. Some would comment on it; some wouldn't. Most couldn't separate it from his relaxed stare or black silken shirts.

Jael had no way of knowing that her father frequented that teetering edge of insanity, or even that he was fair game for gossip in the school where she grew up - the other school, the one back in the states.

He was just Daddy, the only one who really loved her, and that was fine enough. She took his love passively, like most communication she had had with the outside world. He still shopped for her and chose her clothes, and as a man who kept a closet of infinite sets of the same outfit, he found it a difficult task. Little-girl dresses in dark colors and velvets, and stockings with stripes or argyle or polka-dots. And little Mary-Jane shoes, and turtlenecks to wear beneath the itchy overall dress. When Aunt Erin or Eve dressed her there was much more color - and pink! yellow! rose! - shades like sorbet and cute little hats that went with matching gloves. But in all honesty, most of that passed her by. Clothes to Jael were something that she put on her body in the morning and was not allowed to wear during bath-time. But now she was school-age, and still dressed like one of the tiny people in her dollhouse.

She had fought for that, and in his shock at her vehemence, Devon had given in quickly. She wanted to bring her dollhouse to school. He was terrified that she would be the outcast, the odd duck and the butt of every joke, but there was nothing he could do. And now he was stuck carrying her suitcase, feeling like the Grim Reaper, with all her clothes and books and - God - that dollhouse the size of a closet inside.

So he had at least decided to drop her off at school himself, albeit a little late.

They slipped in the side door and Jael, her hand loosely cupped in his, looked around carefully at everyone's shoes. There were parents, students, and teachers milling about; unfair thoughts piled up in Devon's mind as professor after professor walked by, and he immediately ticked them each off as likely to be a complete failure at teaching. At last he found someone with whom he trusted such a vital question, if albeit it was a little dry in its delivery: "Should I just set her on one of the tables, then?"
