Innocence lost

Talora nodded. This wasn't so bad. Sure the girl looked hostile, but then she always looked hostile, it was probably just her natural expression. At least she was talking, and her wand was nowhere in sight.

"It was lovely thank you," she responded automatically, then bit her lip slightly. This wasn't exactly true. It had been just as every other summer had been, a long pastoral moment in her life with her family. It was as it had always been; and yet something had changed. And that something was Tal herself.

Her mother swam with her in the morning light, her father let her loose on his beloved library tomes, her grandmother taught her how to tame and extract vital components from the wild woodland plants and her grandfather and she experimented with not-quite-exactly-legal creations.

And Talora had participated, but she also wept alone in her room, for she felt keenly the loss of her childhood pursuits which were no longer enough to entertain or amuse.

She wrote long and thoughtful letters to Leo, receiving equally full replies. And she started to research her own history, the thoughts of the girl, and the bridge and the broom locked away in her closet never far from her mind.

And what she had discovered, or at least what she thought she had discovered filled her with an ever rising horror and dread. On more than one occasion she had felt like yelling out in front of her parents, demanding to know her truth. But that was not her way.

"Well," she said finally, for the girl said nothing still, "I suppose it was a little dull really." She felt incredibly disloyal and blushed slightly.

"What kind of tournament did you win?" she asked eyeing the Schuler girl with large wary eyes.
