The four pipes hold the dock in place so securely that it won't move. A connection to shore is not necessary except to provide access to and from the dock. We use two foot wide planks for that purpose made out of 2 pieces of 2 X 6 X 16 covered with a sheet of half inch plywood ripped in half.
