Jeff:

Reverend Sinclair wrote in his diary entry of July 8, 1898 that Jesse Murphy shot Soapy Smith. I've transcribed the entire entry on my new webpage devoted to some of Sinclair's papers at:

http://montanadawn.com/Reverend_Sinclair.html

He wrote an article for THE TORONTO GLOBE on July 9 and mailed it off that day. In that article he wrote: "another shot was fired at “Soapy” from his own rifle, which had been wrenched from his grasp."

After Sinclair posted this article to the Globe, he went to the coroner's inquest, where he listened to several hours of testimony. In his letter to his wife of July 11, he does not mention Jesse Murphy at all. He refers her to his Globe article.

On July 11, he DID preach a sermon over Jefferson R. Smith's body, in which he credited "God who inspired heroic Reid with courage, steadied his nerve, and directed his fire so unerringly that the leader of lawbreakers had not one breath to call his followers to violence. By His intervention no life was lost but that one which alone could have put any great obstacle in the way of Skaguay’s liberation."

I'm sure you'll correct me if I understand Sinclair incorrectly, but this sounds to me like he changed his mind and believed, after four days, that Reid killed Smith. The testimony by the witnesses at the coroner's inquest had some effect on him.

You can read the entire transcribed documents at my website; and of course, the original documents at your leisure at any time.

This does not mean I believe Reid killed Smith. This means that I believe most of the people in Skagway believed Reid killed Smith, despite early evidence to the contrary.
