What my book actually says is this, "Although Jeff was reported in New York at the end of November, at a Thanksgiving masquerade ball, The Skaguay News listed a “J. Smith” attending as a Tin Goblin"
I certainly do not make it out to be a "fact" that Soapy was in Skagway at that time. It is still possible that it indeed was him, and until we know for certain then my statement stands as is.
