People may appreciate the game. But, I think Americans really value stellar athleticism. I know there was a period of time where baseball was being populated by glorified softball players. But I don't think that's a very good thing for the long term health of the sport.
I think the only comparison I can think of to baseball is... golf. And golf is getting a heck of a lot more athletic. Not less.
I don't think baseball can actually afford to not be competing with football in particular for the same athletes. Basketball and soccer are concerning as well.
Gonzo makes a good point, though. That I completely buy. Football is in a world of hurt (literally and figuratively). It's a great game. And it's perfect for today's sporting culture. But I don't see how any parent lets their kid play football without dramatic safety changes. That may take 15-20 yrs to happen. But, we are talking long term, here.
So... more pressing. You guys up for a beer next week? Tuesday?
Is that really a problem, though? I suppose there is some marketing downside to losing the few athletes that baseball grabs between multiple sport stars now -- some of those guys can be very exciting ... more
