to my eyes he's been giving it his all defensively this year and has made plays that he wouldn't have made if he was going about it in a lackadaisical way.
I agree they need to move on soon, but he's not the kind of player that gets released as he brings enough to the table to be starting for someone, as in there aren't 30 better 2b right now, IMO, and there probably aren't 20 of them. It's just a matter of finding a fit and figuring out how much money needs to be eaten. The fit should present itself soon enough if the team is willing to show a smidgen of patience.
Can't they make their point in a less drastic fashion versus releasing him outright in April? If no opportunities presents themselves in the next two months it would make going that route much more plausible from where I am sitting.
Like most every padre, he stunk at home last year. On the road he fared a good deal better, hitting .263/.358/.383 for the year and from June 1st on he hit .289/.358/.437. Last year with RISP he hit .270/.392/.380 regardless where the game was played. Far from a useless player to other teams in need, whomever they may be.
I just don't buy that no team will need/want him in the upcoming months, and don't agree with losing out on the money at stake by forgoing that route.

If there aren't 20 or 30 better 2b now, that was true over the winter as well. Given our record of unloading mediocre offensive players over the past few years, I'm not holding my breath. He and... more
It will be interesting to see how the Bartlett situation resolves. I don't think his option will vest, and doubt he lasts as the starting shortstop through June. He'll be dealt along with 80% of his... more
