my name and Luebke's success coming in the same post. I agree on expecting any of the young arms to produce at the level that Luebke has early on. To be fair, Luebke's numbers would put him amongst the top 5 or 10 starters in the game, so it's not really fair to expect him to post such robust numbers over a 200 inning workload. Only one starter that threw 100+ innings struck out a higher percentage of batters than Luebke did in all of baseball last year. I have high expectations, but not that high.

All these guys are in a similar boat to me, capable of being #2 type starters, with a varying degree of assistance from their home park. I've already touched on the things Kelly has in his favor over Erlin/Wieland, despite lesser minor league numbers that I think bodes well for his future.

I think what Alan was suggesting was two of the three developing into more then quality starters, ala Luebke, and not a #3/4 type that many expected initially. Guys you wouldn't fault the team for locking up early in their careers.

Nice to see both Luebke and Volquez bounce back after poor first innings. It's too bad Volquez doesn't have better command, with his stuff he'd be a legit TOR starter. His stuff and Latos is comparable, but boy, after two starts it's sure made Latos' greatest strength, his ability to throw a lot of strikes with an above-average ability to locate his stuff at such an early age, really stand out.

Pretty excited to see how Keyvius Sampson fares in AA this year and am glad they had him skip a level. Makes their collection of arms at AA/AAA that much stronger.

  • Joe Wieland promotedChase, Wed Apr 11 17:52
I was doing my nightly routine of checking out the boxscores of the Padres affiliates and was wondering why Wieland only lasted 2 innings, despite I think 4 strikeouts. Knew this was a possibility,... more

I'm excited for this start. There may not be Latos-like upside here, but if we can get Luebke-level performance out of at least two of Wieland, Erlin and Kelly, there's the makings of a pretty good... more

I think you are short-changing Luebke. He has been pretty much spectacular in his major league career: 3.50 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 9.84 K/9, 3.04 FIP / 3.12 xFIP. Those numbers are overall lightly BETTER... more

I hear ya, I was just pointing out how freaking good Luebke has been. I still think we need to temper our expectations with starting pitching prospects -- expecting 2-out-of-3 of pretty much ANY... more

Agree on the nature of pitching prospects. It's early, but I think we've all been hoping to see what we've seen out of Casey Kelly recently. That his stuff would just sort of win out - Brandon Morrow ... more

don't get me wrong -- I still loved the Latos trade and definitely agree that, on the surface, with the Petco effect in play Volquez should put up comparable overall numbers (sub 4 ERA, lots of K's). ... more

Yeah, the walks are going to prevent Volquez from matching Latos' FIP & xFIP. But in terms of era & K/9, it could be close. Clearly his walks are going to hurt a lot less pitching for the Padres then ... more

Alan- Agree completely on those points. Kelly is going to be the interesting one for me. I think we know relatively speaking what we're getting with Wieland. He isn't going to walk anyone and strikes ... more
