It will be interesting to see how the Bartlett situation resolves. I don't think his option will vest, and doubt he lasts as the starting shortstop through June. He'll be dealt along with 80% of his salary & buyout or he will be released. I'd bet a dollar on that happening.

I didn't get the impression that the Padres were willing to send 5m along with Hudson to move him this off-season (swap for Street), so I think it's one of those situations that has to play out a bit before a team takes that route (willingness to pony up the dough). As far as holding out until a team loses their 2b, what's the positive, and extra 2m for Moores/Moorad to split? What I'm trying to say is you guys are right, there is no positive at this point on the O-dog front. Really wish Forsythe was an option right now at 2b.

I think some time during the next two months our middle infield will consist of the likes of Cabrera, Parrino & Forsythe. If Forsythe isn't healthy at that time we could see Vincent Belnome added to the 40-man and take the same spot.

I need to remember that the Padres aren't a well-oiled machine right now, and saving 2m doesn't really mean squat.

Well, the TV contract is a "done" deal according to Moores, and the Padres are getting a $200MM up-front bonus. I'm sure we will hear about how that money is going to upgrades at Petco, an expansion... more

Sounds like Moores is putting the team right up for sale again. He's going to make out pretty nicely in the transaction (as will Jeff Moorad and his ownership group). But it sounds like he really has ... more

I think its great news. Like you said, it can't really get much worse. Moorad couldn't cover a week's worth of salaries on his own and Moores doesn't want anything to do with the team.....it's hard... more

It's great news and awful news at the same time. That the payroll of this team this year is the same as it was in the late 90s at Qualcomm is pretty disgusting considering the baseball financials of... more

Appropriately somber, I think. And I'd imagine you're spot on about Magic Johnson's role in the ownership group. I love Magic, but he's little more than a front guy for another massively leveraged... more

Yeah, it really has turned into Major League. The sickest part hasn't come yet, either. Moores is going to sell this thing for $600M+. And yeah, Moorad's going to get paid - and probably... more

According to MLB: The Padres simply don't matter. We aren't the Pirates, but we're close. Well back to Moores. If they wrote this in a movie, I wouldn't have believed it.
      • Re: We All Have to Realizejst25, Mon Apr 9 01:21
Yeah, true that. McCourt wants to borrow $200MM against what will be a $2-3 billion deal, no dice because TV revenues should stay with the team. But Moores gets $200MM up-front out of a $1 billion,... more

I think a major distinction with the McCourt deal was that the other owners already wanted him GONE. Real bad. He had already bled the Dodgers org dry and was basically trying to use the up-front... more
