Yeah, so much of Joyner and Grace's value came from the defense. And while neither was ever fast, Alonso takes the base-clogging thing to an extreme. Both also had several seasons of positive K/BB rates, and even though Alonso looks capable of controlling the strikeouts, I don't see him doing it less than he walks.
One non-scientific thing about Alonso -- just visually, even knowing his minor league record and his age, he looks like he should hit for more power than he has. That was true of Burroughs, too, but still, it gives me some hope.
BTW, CD, I've gotten two spams from your (at least one of your) email addresses. Nothing pornographic, "make millions" type of things. Time to change the old password and confound the hackers.

Totally agree about rizzo. Couple follow up questions.... 1) how much do you think you need to move the fences to get the park to play neutral? Moderate pitchers park? 2) isnt their more value in... more
Generally I would think that it is easier and cheaper to not have to worry about spending on pitching Han hitting. However, there might be a tipping point that it becomes so difficult to attract... more
There is a reason this guy has been a top-100 prospect each of the past four years. From BA (33, 73, 45, 35) - he can really hit. It takes a special kind of hitter to have any chance in hell of... more
If they're able to draft and develop hitters, I'd expect they should be able to keep them. That's a lot of why the Rizzo trade was just so terrible. Headley's value's going to be suppressed on the FA ... more
You also could have thrown out one of my personal faves, John Olerud. He is the quintessential slick-fielding, marginal-power 1B for me. My biggest concern with Petco is that I think it inhibits the... more
So, what would you do to the park to neutralize it? Still curious about that. Completely agree that there remains a huge knowledge gap with the effects on parks on hitting. On the surface, I think... more
It is easy to romanticize the 2-1 Petco special, I think. At least I know I have. When you had Jake Peavy going against Roy Oswalt, both at the top of their game, a 2-1 outcome might indicate that... more
I didn't mind the 2-1 games either. Realistically, I don't know what they're going to be able to do to get the park to neutral. Moving the fences in further is going to be more prohibitive for 2B and ... more
That's a good idea about making the infield faster, particularly since the Padres have the highest GB/FB ratio in the league. Surprisingly they lead the league in both doubles & walks, after placing... more
I'm talking Arizona in the middle of March fast. Like, really, really fast. I want the other teams complaining about it the same we can complain about Petco currently. Then you get all fly ball... more
