Not that it changes things too much, but I'm assuming everybody saw stony brook made it to Omaha. Pretty remarkable.i would've told you jankowski was the raiders kicker two weeks ago so I'm certainly not in a position to know if he has a real shot. But is nice to see one of the breakout stars of the cws affiliated with the pads. Bright spots anywhere you can find them.
So.......big day today. The major league teeth kicking we've been taking since opening day has all but demolished my enthusiasm for everything Padres, but I'd be pretty excited for Correa. Everybody... more
If Correa is still on the board he's probably the best shortstop prospect for the Padres taking going back to Stephen Drew. All the good ones have been long gone by the time the Padres turn comes... more
The catcher at the high school where I work should get his named called the first half of the day tomorrow. He had committed to USD, but they have two junior catchers and wanted to farm him out to... more
Is one of the international catcher's suppose to take most of the playing time in rookie ball this year or next? Not to defend them because their scouting in Socal has been terrible/pathetic over... more
I think there are a few good reasons for the Padres to avoid HS catchers. I was just shocked that they'd be using their resources to take a first look at any player five days before the draft.
Lance McCullers Jr!!! That's awesome. Lance McCullers was inexplicably one of my favorite players of all-time. Was just kind of hilarious to see that name in the draft. I had no idea. How insane is... more
Holy smokes is that disconcerting. I know nothing about who is available. Correa is a ss from pr? And apparently in the sights of the o's. Anybody else?
Afraid to ask - but I'm assuming Fried will be significantly cheaper? How did they not take Appel? I've actually seen Appel pitch a couple of times live up here so maybe I sold myself short in terms... more
I don't question the pick, I just assumed Appel was head and shoulders above everybody else left, which turns out not to have been true. Love that Hawkins kid with the backflip, though. Not to pick,... more
Ok, good. So they didn't go cheap? Honestly know nothing of fried. Just that Appel was a potential #1 (or so I thought?) did Appel drop or was there just a bunch of guys right at the same grade?
According to BA, Fried was the highest ranked lefty in the draft and was expected to go in the top-10. Really, if all goes well, he could be our Madison Bumgarner. So, that's not a bad thing. They... more
7) Max Fried - LHP (HS) 33) Zach Eflin - RHP (HS) 44) Travis Jankowski - CF (Col) 55) Walker Weickel - RHP (HS) According to BA, the Padres walked away with the 2nd, 7th & 8th top ranked high school... more
The CF we picked doesn't seem any different than Danny Brad Chalk Payne. A signable college kid with wheels and a whole lotta questions about the stick. Can't have too many high-ceiling arms. Eflin... more
That sounds like selling Jankowski short. Chalk had some pretty great plate discipline in college - 107bb/55k in 596 AB, but had no pop (0 hr, 6 3b) and so-so speed for his skillset (32sb/8cs).... more
The stats for college are all but useless given the conference and bat differences. He had a nice Cape season, but he's still a player whose strongest skills are his feet and his glove with big bat... more
The reason he looks better then Chalk & Payne isn't solely on their failure. He's a better hitter then Chalk, more thump in his bat, more speed on the bases. The difference in strikeouts between him... more
Honestly Chase that's the problem, the difference between Jonk and Payne is pretty much on the margins when we're talking statistical analysis, especially if you make any adjustment for the lack of... more
I didn't say solely. I said one. Jankowski played in the America East Conference. Not to pooh-pooh that, but Chalk played for Clemson and Payne for Georgia Tech. You can't just compare their stats as ... more
from Mad Friars chat with Kevin Goldstein: We asked the Padres this; is Travis Jankowski Brad Chalk 2.0? Is he more than a slap hitter? Kevin Goldstein: Wow that is a pretty pessimistic viewpoint. He ... more
IMO....they just wasted 1M on a guy not likely to ever end up higher than a 4th outfielder. What's the point in drafting? Better to throw the pick back if you can't find someone else to take... more
A lot of smart people liked him. A guy who I believe is RC reincarnated elsewhere likened him to a young Steve Finley. Watching video of him he looks like a hitter to me. Never going to be a power... more
His ultimate upside isn't 4th outfielder. That's where the optimistic and probability lines meet, though. A Finley comp wouldn't have been outrageous for Payne, Chalk, Drew Macias, Kory DeHaan, or a... more
Maybe I'm just making excuses, but the draft luxury tax and our aggressiveness early probably means fewer risks the rest of the way. I can't see the Padres signing too many guys for up to 1.75x the... more
Do you think the HS arms are going to get so much over slot that we exhaust our pool? I ask because it doesn't seem that way to me -- that the first 14 picks are going to cost us $9.9M, unless they... more
I think it's tough to say how it's going to go. But we got four first round talents according to many folks -- and they have leverage in that they could go to college. The slotting will make things... more
I think there are going to be plenty of "last minute" style deals from now on, teams and players not announcing deals until 30 minutes before deadline.....that is, unless they are for exactly slot.... more
Wahoo may have alluded to this before, but the Cubs picking right before us several times could be a dream-killer. Or at least a dream-maimer. The employees and players can all say the same stoic... more
