We asked the Padres this; is Travis Jankowski Brad Chalk 2.0? Is he more than a slap hitter?

Kevin Goldstein: Wow that is a pretty pessimistic viewpoint. He was a very good college centerfielder. A good to plus runner, very athletic, great make-up, which usually means that he has a good chance to get better, and he has good size. Is he a power hitter? No, but there were really only five power hitters in the whole draft. I liked him.

        I think there are a few good reasons for the Padres to avoid HS catchers. I was just shocked that they'd be using their resources to take a first look at any player five days before the draft.

        That sounds like selling Jankowski short. Chalk had some pretty great plate discipline in college - 107bb/55k in 596 AB, but had no pop (0 hr, 6 3b) and so-so speed for his skillset (32sb/8cs).... more

        The stats for college are all but useless given the conference and bat differences. He had a nice Cape season, but he's still a player whose strongest skills are his feet and his glove with big bat... more

        The reason he looks better then Chalk & Payne isn't solely on their failure. He's a better hitter then Chalk, more thump in his bat, more speed on the bases. The difference in strikeouts between him... more
