Adrian had a 6.6 WAR year last year and has a 1.9 WAR this year, but the year's not over. He's a better bet to be better than Alonso for quite a while as well, but as many people (not me) point out on this board when he was dealt... he's probably not going to have a lot of 6+ WAR seasons in him.
And so letting him go was probably the right decision at the time.
Yonder's at .8 WAR. The Rizzo, in many less PAs, already has a .9 WAR. So there's that as well.
Had they signed Adrian to a long-term deal this would have been his first free agent year covered. He's having a down year in the power department, and because of it the two 1b share a lot of... more
Tis the nature of marginal benefit. Also, Gonzalez is having a particularly Hal Morris like season. But yeah? Looks like a decent move. Would've been that much better if rizzo was still here (as jay... more
Last year the 1st half OPS+ was 94, second half was 108. Seems like they are on pace to repeat again this year. September 2010 broke the trend, unfortunately, but this happens nearly every year.
Wait, what? Last year's OPS+ ended up at 86, this year is currently at 91. Where are you getting 94 and 108? Am I missing or misunderstanding something?
Oh, you were talking about tOPS (split relative to total). Anyways, I felt this trend anecdotally, back in like '07, but when I checked the numbers, it wasn't conclusive. Now with a larger sample, it ... more
Yep. It seems so obvious to me, and I wonder when the mainstream mlb media would get a clue and stop marveling every April at their surprisingly good pitching or crappy hitting.
True. But as Jay says, it's not that pronounced across the league. Probably because weather is different across the country. I've always felt this way about the media in/around the Padres. This trend ... more
MLB-wide, the difference is not that substantial (like 99 to 101). For Petco, it seems to be more exaggerated, at least starting a couple of years after the park opened.
Agon's Boston experience definitely shows that park factors are complicated, and different parks affect different players differently. Clearly, Adrian's approach is messed up right now, he used to be ... more
Yeah, you could make a similar salary-hitting comparison between Adrian and probably fifty 1 WAR position players. No team would be happy paying 20+ million for a 2 WAR player, but no competitive... more

while some skepticism is warranted, it's worth noting that the Cubs have clearly revamped Rizzo's stance/swing to help shorten his stroke and get rid of that loopy path to the ball. take a look at... more
Perhaps, but it appears to be one of those hindsight moments where you lose out on the guy we all wanted, and are better off because of it. Regardless of what % of the payroll his 22m salary would... more
