Not cake.

Leo ignored the protests. It was simpler that way. Otherwise he'd have to try and fathom how she could name a thing, call it George or Fred or the like, and then be perfectly happy to turn it inside out. That was verging into uncomfortable and it was best if he ignored it. Especially the hamster ball.

"Good," he smiled. She was wary and he understood that. For their little group surprises hadn't always gone well, no matter how well planned...well no. Nothing they had ever done that led to the bad surprises was well planned, which went a long way to explaining how one or more of them kept being kidnapped, scared to death and otherwise maimed. He should look into that.

He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and lead her out of the door, away from the study lab and the variously named worms. "It's not cake," he promised as they walked. "It's also not a unicorn...or a keychain, but hey. Now I know what to get you for your birthday."

They took the road to the village, his arm around her waist and her hand in the back pocket of his jeans. There were groups of students who still stared a bit but they ignored them. It didn't matter. He steered her towards the Cherry Pit which looked amazingly different in the daylight. Patrons were allowed to do things like use the front entrance, a much nicer, wider doorway with actual steps - a massive improvement on the glorified hole in a wall that they used after dark.

In the lobby they were presented with four possible directions. To the left was the Pit, the twilight hours drinking hole of choice for Aelcrest students. To the right, the more respectable daylight Cherry in which you could purchase a half decent sandwich and ice cream floats. A set of stairs led upwards to the rooms they had for rent, usually by those who drank too much. The fourth option, the one they took, led to a small function room somewhere in the middle that few people knew existed.

He put his hands over her eyes as they waddled through the door, taking care not to let her hit her head or trip over the dip in the floor. Inside, he had set up an old movie projector and a sofa just for the two of them. The film strips were full of classic cartoons and there was even some popcorn in a cardboard tub on the side table.

He revealed the scene and waited for a reaction. He thought he'd done pretty well.
