Connell and Hayes had followed the trail to the third floor bathing rooms of Camden State. A pipe somewhere had burst, causing the sounds of a miniature waterfall to echo off the tile. The whole scene was lit in dilapidated blue-greys and the soundtrack was silent save for the rushing water and the clack and shhhwh of their shoes. The smile on Grace’s lips and her grip on Leo’s arm dropped. Her stare went glassy, her temperature dropped a few degrees. Her mind, normally full of the blankness of a practiced defence, was now full of chaotic fog. She flinched at on onscreen jump scare, gasping back to her regular breathing and blinked blurrily at the world around her. She gave Leo a small smile “ Right back. “ She whispered to him “Take good notes.”

In the lobby, she paced a few times, getting her breathing back to normal and her temperature up again, getting the shakiness out of her legs. Every so often, she paused, flinching as a passer-by looked like a looming shadow in her peripherals. The incidents were less frequent with the alcove practices. She could stretch out the time between the first oncoming signals and the actual Sight, and she could treat them more like lucid dreams, but that didn’t stop the unexpected triggers.

She ducked into the bathroom to splash warm water on her face and take a dose. Leo distrusted the medicine, but Leo only had to live with it, instead of in it. It was all just controllable facts to him. She rolled her shoulders and looked at her own reflection, slightly pale, with bright pinkness along the cheeks and forehead.

There was no Bogeyman, she reminded herself. Randy had gotten Mr. Donal to take him to it’s lair. It wasn’t a lair and he was a frail, broken thing that barely qualified as human.

But that was part of the trick wasn‘t it, part of her whispered back.

In any case, it wasn’t here. Couldn’t be here. Not now.

“Not today.” she whispered to her reflection. “ Not tonight.” The mirror was plain glass, and had nothing to say back. She waited until her reflections eyes looked focused enough, then checked the time. Three minutes. Good job Leo was not the worrying type.

She slipped back into her seat and answered his questioning look by plucking his jacket from him and wrapping it around her over her cardigan. “Looks better on me." She wrapped one of her arms around his again. " Tell me I only missed boring, talky bits. ”
