Just making it, I hope

The musical stood out in Starr's mind as the one thing he'd really enjoyed and been good at in his first year at RMI. There were elements of his practical school work that had gone ok – he wasn't bad with a wand – but he always knew the homework assignment was lurking behind those little triumphs, waiting to drag him down. He got practical magic. It was an intuitive feeling to him, part of who he was, and something that he turned to any task at hand, as the need suited him. But here everyone wanted it discussed and explained to the enth degree. That wasn't what magic was to him.

But here he was, waiting to audition again for the musical, and actually feeling calm and happy. He'd spent his whole life performing and it didn't occur to him to feel nervous. He just felt excited at the chance to do what he enjoyed. The only awkward part was the paperwork – it seemed you couldn't escape that anywhere in this place. Most of the boxes still mystified him. He put 'mysterious man last year' under voice part, hoping Addi remembered what that made him, and for height put 'average for fifth year.' He didn't really know a lot about the parts, but thought that playing Snoopy sounded the most fun from the descriptions, so put 'preferably Snoopy but don't mind.' Addi knew his skills and experience from last year so he put 'same + mysterious man' down there. He also filled out the pit band form just in case he didn't get into the main show, simply stating 'same as last year.' It didn't really occur to him to be detailed and to sell himself – he just wanted to get the paperwork done in as few words as possible because he found it difficult and irksome.

He hung about a bit, watching other people rehearse, just out of curiosity. People-watching was always fun. He didn't start to weigh them up as competition. Everything he'd always done had been about collaborating – about there being enough space to incorporate everyone's skills. He just enjoyed seeing what everyone else could do. After he'd had his fill, he wandered into the audition room.

His singing had always been naturally tuneful enough, though distinctly unpolished. He'd had the benefits of Addi's input last year but, as the only songs that sprung to mind for auditions were the folk songs he'd picked up as a child, that knowledge and input slipped away. The song needed a beat, so Starr sat down on the wooden stage, his baggy purple trousers easily allowing him to sit cross legged, and began to tap out the beat on the stage and his own knees. He lapsed back into his simple campfire style of singing as he began the song, this one a more upbeat number than the one he'd chosen last year. It told of a jester, travelling from town to town, with not much to show for his efforts but always with enough bread on his plate and a smile on his face, which was always as much as needed or wanted in life. It was a favourite among the travelling community, and Starr found himself stumbling slightly as he got to the first chorus and found that everyone else wasn't enthusiastically joining in. He was sure he put enough oomph in that it sounded merry, and he supposed that the audition panel wouldn't know any different, but to him it sounded a little lack lustre without a good round of voices joining in.

After he'd finished up, he gave a smile and a nod to Addi and her companions and went off, considering what to do with the rest of his day. A walk in the fake outdoors, perhaps, he thought with a sigh.
