Oh dear, he seemed to have ignited a fury that was unstoppable. He saw a deep, dark rage within those blue eyes of her, he could sense the raw, unadulterated fury directed to one sole point in the universe: himself. Today, although his dark brown eyes did not show it, he tasted the bitter tea of fear, he danced precariously on the brink of death. This Saffire Hathaway, Lyra, would be the end of him. Today was the day that he would die.

“I’m sure that has something to do with why I can’t do this simple spell!”

He took a deep breathe, maintaining his composure, and kept his eyes steadily on her. If he was to go out, he would face death with dignity. He would not cower, he would not weep, he would not beg. He would leave this world as he had lived it, stoically and calm. She raised her wand, and he was reminded of the words from the Baghavad Gita: Now I am become death; destroyer of worlds. He merely hoped that his death would ease the fire raging in her soul, her soul that seemed to be naught but a fire (heheheh, Safire… a fire… he would have to remember that) of rage and torment.

And then she turned and cleaned the sock in one go. She turned to thank him, he nodded with a pleased smile. “I’m glad I could be of service. Anytime you need aid, just ask.”

He wasn’t sure that his heart could take another time.
