These boots are made for cleanin’

The goal was “learn magic,” and Spellwork seemed like it taught the most useful kind of magic, so Cope dutifully tried to read his textbook and pay attention in class. The book was still dense and he still didn’t take very good notes, but at least the third-year was trying.

It didn’t help that the professor had changed again. In another instance of RMI staff playing musical chairs with their jobs, last year’s librarian was this year’s Spellwork teacher. Librarians made Copeland nervous—they were really smart and liked quiet—so he was hoping the class would be easier now that he’d already done it twice. He didn’t want to have to ask Professor Clarke for help.

Luckily, he remembered the Scourgify lesson from last year. Cope grabbed the pair of boots from the cardboard box at the front of the room, figuring dirt was one of the least objectionable substances he could have to clean. Dad used to take him hiking in Bighorn National Forest, and Cope was used to scraping dried mud off his hiking boots. He knew he wouldn’t be able to use magic when he was home, but it’d be nice to clean the easier way.

Copeland’s first attempt at the spell made the larger chunks of mud vanish, but left a thin, dry layer of dust on the boots. He clenched his jaw irritably and tried not to be too obvious when he glanced around at the other students. If the first years were doing better on this than he was, Copeland was going to quit school or something.

But no, it looked like it was taking almost everyone a few tries to get the spell right. When he tried a second time, the rest of the dirt vanished too. The brown-haired Beater grinned. Two tries, in the scheme of things, wasn’t that bad—it was definitely better than he’d ever done before. Copeland leaned back in his chair. Now that he’d solved the problem of the day, he wasn’t sure what to do with the rest of the hour. Classwork usually took him the whole period, and she hadn’t assigned homework yet. Clarke was probably just going easy on them because it was the first day.
