Professor M. Clarke
[Years 6 & 7] Birds of a feather...

Mary-Louise was in a pleasant mood and waved cheerily at the first flock of students to enter the classroom. A plate of chocolate biscuits was making it’s way around the area, floating towards student at random before coming to a stop, and stubbornly waiting until a student finally picked one from its surface before moving along to the next victim. “Everyone help yourselves to a few biscuits and we’ll just wait for all your classmates to arrive before getting started.”

In the previous lesson she had spoken at length about conjuring charms. They were often challenging to perform and so she left them for the older students to tackle. However, many of their attempts to conjure flowers had been successful and so she had promised to let them move on to more difficult territory. In fact Mary-Louise was incredibly proud of her eldest students. Though, it was true that there were a few...interesting characters amongst them, in general she enjoyed watching them progress each week.

“Now,” she began once everyone was settled, “I realise we have been discussing the value of performing non-verbal magic very recently, however I advise that you tackle today’s spell the old fashioned way and if you then feel comfortable I’ll let you attempt the other. Today you will be learning the bird-conjuring charm , Avis.”

The Spellwork Professor then produced her wand and making an m-shaped motion spoke clearly, “AH-viss!” There was a loud blast, not unlike the sound of a gunshot, which she had failed to prepare her pupils for. Three birds seemed to be blasted from her wand tip, one after the other, and flapped their small wings impatiently. Sounds of chirping soon followed as they flew freely above the children’s heads.

“Does anyone have any questions? No, alright then. Why don’t each of you have a go at it then and give me a shout if you need any help.”

Slumping into her seat she popped on some earmuffs to block out the chaos that was sure to breakout. Then she reached into her drawer and pulled out a stack of essays her beginners class had handed in. It was time to get caught up on all that marking she had been neglecting.

“Well, it has to be real. I guess it’s like, the opposite of Vanishing things. So wherever stuff goes when you Vanish it… is the same place that stuff comes from when you conjure?” This was the part... more

                • “No, I was thinking more like—like clay?” Ika wasn’t sure it made sense, so she elaborated. “Like it… it’s just unformed stuff on the alternate plane or whatever. And when you conjure, pull it back... more
