Although it was only the middle of the afternoon, and she'd had pleasant dreams the night before, Lena was already in danger of falling asleep, forced to keep pinching herself, sinking nails into the base of her palm, blinking rapidly from where she sat in the back of class, trying desperately to focus on the words Professor Rosse's moving mouth was apparently spewing out. On paper, the ingredients and instructions for creating a kid-friendly caffeine substitute potion that was supposed to taste like mint flavored gelato had not seemed all that complicated. Lena had chosen it as her pet project, determined to master something of her own creation, and had started experimentation earlier that morning during a free period, sacrificing her lunch break to add in scorpion tails and mint leaves, wait ten minutes, and cheerfully taste test the concoction.

She supposed she was rather lucky that all she had risked was her attention span (eyes drooping, hearing waning, her body growing heavy, weighed down by merciless gravity) and the green rash that had spread from the base of her neck down her spine, thankfully hidden by her school robes. The rash felt strangely enjoyable; the affect of a cool waterfall running down her back. It was soothing, yet the temperature somewhat counteracted the desire to slump over the desk and submit to blessed sleep. Eh - what? What's he saying? Magnets... magnets... magnets...

Lena bit into her lower lip, causing herself minimum amounts of sharp pain to keep awake, ducking beneath her desk to draw out her violet rimmed glasses from an unzipped pouch on the side of her bag. Keeping her head ducked even as she resurfaced above her desk, she used her curtain of long dark ringlets to partially conceal the shame of having to balance spectacles upon her face. When in merlin's name was someone going to invent a charm to fix eyesight? Lena didn't care if it took dark magic, it was simply unacceptable that the wizarding world had come so far, only to stop the evolution of magic past the point of having to depend upon hideous, loathsome glasses.

Rage seemed to work as a satisfactory stimulant. Lena continued fanning the self righteous flames in her mind, even as she flipped through her notes, dark eyes adjusting to helpful magnification, her finger pausing over last week's notes where they'd discussed poles, iron, nickel and the like. Dipping her quill in ink, Lena flipped the page of her bound parchment paper, and began scribbling down information on compasses, and instructions for the afternoon lesson. Compass = Magnet. Rotates freely, aligns with earth, magnetic alignment for 1,000 years to find North Pole sleigh where the penguins have atoms -

Lena blinked, staring down at what she'd just written, confused for a moment on whether that made sense or not. "Um, no." She softly chided herself, crossing out what she'd last written, and glancing up to see her classmates slipping out from their chairs to approach Professor Rosse. Pale caramel cheeks coloring, Lena sank three sharp nails into her palm and soundlessly kicked her shin with the other foot, trying to jolt herself awake and restart her memory. Try as she might, she couldn't recall what Rosse had said, the specific instructions he'd given. She thought about asking for help, but admitting to either the professor or a fellow student that she hadn't paid attention was too humiliating a plan.

She needed help without having to ask for it, and so glanced between each of her neighbors before picking the one she hoped was more likely to help out, her vision however blurred by grogginess, all rational perception now compromised. "Would you like to be partners?" She smiled, doing her best not to feel too self conscious about the stupid glasses slipping down the slope of her nose, or the rising fatigue threatening a yawn deep inside her throat. She managed to hold it down for now.
