Charline Adler (Lyra)
Don't mind me, I'm just feeling sorry for myself.

Change was rarely good and Charline didn’t approve of it. Sometimes too much change could even be disastrous. She felt like she had reached a period in her life where everything was changing. While before she had only knew of the expectations she had to live up to they had never seemed more real. Before she had thought herself to be among the most privileged now she considered herself to be unlucky. But then her sacrifices were necessary, were they not?

It was becoming apparent to the young girl that perhaps she was not quite as grown up as she had previously believed. If she was a mature individual then she would have been able to fulfil her role with ease. Only she was failing. This her Papa had made very clear to her. Failure sat uneasily with the Lyra but for once she could not put together a plan of action to become better. No matter what she did the control and obedience she needed to become truly perfect was always out of her grasp.

It was due to her growing resentment towards change that, instead of feeling relieved and victorious now that the old headmaster (the Muggle cuddling fool) had been replaced, she was upset and angry. The new headmaster was going to be even more of a fool. The school-which was already in disarray- would fall to pieces once and for all. Things should have remained the same. It wasn’t fair. Change wasn’t fair.

Though she had never been the happiest pupil, since returning after midterm, Charline had been wrapped in misery and self pity. Little interested her these days and nothing ever amused her. She had even stopped with her project no longer bothering to learn anymore signs. What was the point? Was there any point to any of this at all? It was not like she would ever need a real education.

She didn’t bother to brush her hair or straighten her robes when she woke up and she trudged along to class without enthusiasm. No notes were taken and she didn’t even listen to the Professor explain the lesson. Charline only stared into the distance and did something she was getting to be an expert at. She felt sorry for herself.

She wasn’t sure how long she had simply sat there but after some time she thought she heard someone talking to her. Snapping out of her thoughts she turned towards them, raised one pale eyebrow and asked in a bored tone, “Yes? Did you say something?”
